This image was taken at one of the many docks in Iquitos where boats come and go on their way out into the Amazon river basin surrounding this major city in the middle of the Peruvian jungle. During my week in the area, I saw the rising and falling of the water levels, the results of which are calmly adapted to by those who live on or work near the water edge.

Life from birth in the floating shantytown of Belén, consisting of scores of neat rows of huts, built on rafts, which rise and fall with the river, depends on a familiarity with navigating by boat. Seven thousand people live here, and its habitants move around via canoes floating from hut to hut to visit neighbors or sell and trade jungle produce.

We began to talk about her impressions of life as a teen growing up in the jungle are and what she envisions in her future.

The World Food Programme plane into Agok arrives every day to the tiny dirt airfield where NGO workers can hitch a ride to the city of Wau. This two boys approached my airplane and allowed me to photograph them before the plane spun around and took off again.

Life at 11,869 ft (3,618 m) above sea level is tough for both man and materials. This image is of one of the stalls in the market of Murghab. The beautiful doors painted blue and casual ornamentation shows the interminable spirit of man to create, even in some of the harshest of environments.
