The Belén Market has a bad reputation which is not entirely undeserving. A dank, dark, dangerous and chaotic market, it is described as the largest traditional market in the Peruvian Amazon.
Situated in the southeast of Iquitos, the market is the main market for the city where most anything can be purchased. It also is a gateway to the Belén community, a large network of informal settlements which are severely poor, crime ridden and polluted.
I went with several members of the community first to the market and then out into the community where we went “door to door” asking about teens who I could interview about their experiences growing up in such a community.
