Dia de los Muertos processions are popular and beautiful events throughout my home state of California. This one in San Francisco, held in the Mission District, has been a regular community event for over 30 years. At the end of the procession is an open space where the community displays their altars to loved ones.

This old boat reportedly was stuck in the ground near Tomales Bay and Point Reyes in Marin County in California. Shortly after I took this image, someone accidently set it on fire and it is a mere shell of this beautiful wreck.

In the wetlands of Shoreline Park in Mountain View California, native species of birds, bugs and plant are returning since humans realized they must respect the area. Monsignore Fish

While boating tranquilly on one of the lakes in Golden Gate Park, this chubby fish rose to the surface as if out of a Chinese watercolor to greet me to his peaceful home. We stared at each other for a few minutes, his mouth moving but no words were heard, before he dipped back into the water and swam away.

This image was shot above the Grand Prismatic in Yellowstone National Park. It was late in the day and I loved the movement of shadows of the people on the crowded platform on the textured mineral geyser bed so snapped this and a few others, looking for ideal alignment of the recognizable and abstract.

Treasure Island is an artificial island in the San Francisco Bay built for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. After completion of the exposition, control of the island was passed to the US Navy and it served as a Naval Station from 1942-1997. Now, as with many former military facilities decommissioned in the late 1990’s, it is a leisure area, its history on display in condemned buildings, wide boulevards and attempts at revival.

We are at heart so profoundly anarchistic that the only form of state we can imagine living in is Utopian; and so cynical that the only Utopia we can believe in is authoritarian.
